Manitoulin Island isn't an abstraction to our practice. Dr. Derek Lewis grew up in Wikwemikong, on the eastern side of the Island, and returned there to practice dentistry after graduating with his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1997. He worked on Manitoulin Island from 1997 to 2014, and continues to maintain a connection to the Wikwemikong Dental Clinic today alongside his work in Sudbury.

That history means our team has a genuine understanding of what it's like to arrange dental care from the Island — the driving, the planning, the value of not having to make the trip more often than necessary. It's part of why some Island families choose to keep seeing Dr. Lewis even after his practice moved to Sudbury.

Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world, and it's home to a number of distinct communities — Little Current, M'Chigeeng, Manitowaning, Gore Bay, Wikwemikong, Mindemoya, Providence Bay, and others — spread across a large area. Driving distance and time to Sudbury vary significantly depending on where on the Island you're starting from, so we don't try to give one figure that applies to everyone.

As a general point of reference, the drive from Little Current — where the swing bridge connects the Island to the mainland — is roughly 175-180 km via Highway 6 north to Espanola and then Highway 17 into Sudbury, typically taking a little over three hours. If you're coming from further west or south on the Island, plan for more time. These figures are approximate and will vary with your exact starting point, route, traffic, road conditions and weather — please treat them as a starting point for planning, not a guarantee.

Because a visit from the Island usually means a half-day or full-day trip, it's worth spending a few minutes on the phone with our team before you go so the visit is as useful as possible.

We can't promise that every treatment plan will fit into one visit — that depends on your specific dental needs, which the dentist can only assess after an examination — but we'll always be upfront with you about what to expect so you can plan accordingly.

Patients needing a root canal or extraction can also be treated at our Sudbury office, and for those missing multiple teeth, we offer full and partial dentures.
