Whiter teeth are one of the most requested cosmetic changes we hear about โ and one of the most misunderstood. Both in-office and at-home whitening can work well; the right choice depends on your budget, timeline, and how sensitive your teeth are.
1 How Whitening Actually Works
Whitening products use a peroxide-based bleaching agent that breaks down stain molecules within the enamel and the layer beneath it. It's important to note this only works on natural teeth โ crowns, veneers, and fillings won't change colour, which can leave them looking mismatched after whitening if they were originally matched to a darker shade.
2 In-Office vs. At-Home, Side by Side

"Custom take-home trays are the middle ground most patients don't know about โ you get a professional-strength gel in a tray molded to your exact teeth, so it works better than a one-size-fits-all strip without requiring an in-office visit."
Dr. Derek Lewis, DDS โ Long Lake Family Dentistry3 Is Whitening Safe for Everyone?
For most healthy adults, whitening is safe when used as directed. Temporary sensitivity to hot or cold is the most common side effect and usually fades within a day or two of finishing treatment. That said, whitening isn't right for everyone right away:
Worth a conversation first if: you have untreated cavities or gum disease (whitening gel can irritate exposed areas), significant existing sensitivity, or visible fillings/crowns on front teeth. A quick exam beforehand avoids an unpleasant surprise.
